Frequently Asked Questions

Choose locking hubs for the front axle and hub system actually on the vehicle. Vehicle year and model, axle type, spline count, and whether the hub uses an internal, external, or flange mount can all affect fit. If the axle has been swapped or converted, identify the installed hardware instead of relying on the original vehicle application.

Sometimes, but the conversion is application-specific. WARN notes that some vehicles require a spindle-nut conversion kit when changing from factory automatic hubs to manual hubs, and some full-time 4WD applications need additional transfer-case changes. Confirm that a manual-hub conversion is supported for the exact vehicle and axle, and include any required conversion hardware instead of assuming the manual hub set is a direct swap.

Use a service kit when the existing hub is still serviceable and the correct kit is available for that hub model. Service kits may cover items such as seals, snap rings, bolts, or O-rings. Choose a complete hub when the hub assembly itself is damaged, the needed parts are not serviceable, or the current hub is not supported by the available kit.

Locking hubs connect or disconnect the front wheels from the front axle shafts on a compatible 4WD system. With manual hubs unlocked, the front wheels can roll without driving the front axle and much of the front driveline; when the hubs are locked, the wheels are connected to the axle so four-wheel drive can transmit torque to them. Locking the hubs does not shift the transfer case by itself—you still use the vehicle's 4WD control as required for that system.
