Lighting Relays

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually yes. A relay lets a small dash switch control the high current your lights draw through a short, fused wire run from the battery, which protects the switch and the factory wiring. Many light bar and pod wiring harnesses already include a relay, fuse and switch, so check what came with your lights before buying one separately. Choose a relay rated above the total current of the lights it will power.

For simple on-off control of lights, a 4-pin relay is all you need. A 5-pin relay adds a normally closed terminal that has power when the relay is off, which is useful for switching between two circuits, such as turning one set of lights off when another turns on. Check that the fifth terminal is labeled 87a, because some 5-pin relays instead have two 87 outputs. Match the coil voltage and contact rating to your system, and choose the pin count your harness or socket is designed for.
